Plenty of homes near the preserve have a sunroom, an Arizona room or a great room that faces west. That is usually where the leather couch lives, and from about 2pm on it sits in full sun. Heat pulls moisture out of the hide and makes it stiff.
Meanwhile the spots people touch every day pick up skin oil, hair product and lotion. Warm leather absorbs that faster, so the top of the backrest and the front of each arm turn darker and shinier than the rest of the piece. That uneven look is the most common thing we see here.
We start by identifying the leather type, since each one needs its own handling:
Pigmented or protected leather carries a sealed color layer and is the easiest to clean deeply. Aniline and semi-aniline leather shows the natural grain and has little protection, which also means it marks and fades more readily, so we keep the process mild. Nubuck and suede get a dry, nap-friendly cleaning and a brushing to lift the pile; we skip conditioner on those because a coating would flatten and stain them.
A small test in an out-of-sight area comes first so we know how the hide responds. If you add conditioning on smooth leather, it goes on after the cleaning, and it matters more in a room that bakes every afternoon.

Darkened headrests and arm fronts usually lighten up noticeably, and general grime, body oil and denim transfer tend to improve too.
Sun damage is a different story. If the color has faded on the side facing the window, or the surface has cracked, peeled or worn down to bare hide, cleaning will not bring that back. The same goes for tears and deep scratches. We do not repair, recolor or re-dye. What we can do is clean the piece properly, and conditioning helps the leather that is still healthy stay that way.
