A pee pad works most of the time. The trouble is the edges. A small dog steps half on and half off, the pad slides, or it gets used one more time than it should, and the urine runs onto the carpet right underneath. Nobody sees it because the pad is covering it.
In Scottsdale homes with cream, ivory or wool carpet, those hidden spots eventually show up as a yellow square where the pad used to sit, or as a smell in the dressing room or office where the dog was kept during the day.
Small dogs also tend to slip off to a guest room or behind the sofa rather than ask to go out. Those are the places we check first.
