The sand in the joints is structural. It is what stops each paver moving on its own. Once irrigation, monsoon runoff, and years of sweeping pull it out, the pavers shift underfoot, gaps open, and weeds and ants move in.
That is why cleaning alone can leave you worse off. Washing a paver patio flushes out whatever sand is left in the joints, so if nothing goes back in and nothing goes over the top, you have a cleaner patio that is less stable than it was that morning. We price it as a finished job instead.
Sealing over dirt and algae traps them underneath, and now the grime is permanent and under a coating. Cleaning comes first, always, and it is included in both package rates rather than billed on top.
Oil that has soaked in stains from within. We pull a lot of it and it usually improves significantly, but an old spot under where someone parked is rarely gone completely. Rust from irrigation or fertilizer and efflorescence rising out of the paver itself behave the same way. We walk it with you first and tell you which marks are surface and which are not.

Out here the wind does as much damage as the water. Dust blows into the joints where the sand used to be, weeds take root in it, and the next monsoon storm carries the rest away. Pavers set up against open desert lose their joints fastest, and they need the sand replaced before sealing makes any sense.
