The sand in the joints is structural. It is what stops each paver moving on its own. Once irrigation, monsoon runoff, and years of sweeping pull it out, the pavers shift underfoot, gaps open, and weeds and ants move in.
That is why cleaning alone can leave you worse off. Washing a paver patio flushes out whatever sand is left in the joints, so if nothing goes back in and nothing goes over the top, you have a cleaner patio that is less stable than it was that morning. We price it as a finished job instead.
Sealing over dirt and algae traps them underneath, and now the grime is permanent and under a coating. Cleaning comes first, always, and it is included in both package rates rather than billed on top.
