Mesa has a lot of established homes, and with them come pieces people have owned for a long time. A good leather recliner or sofa can last decades. The catch is that every summer in the Valley takes a little more moisture out of it.
Long-owned leather tends to show it in a few ways. The surface feels stiff or a bit papery. Arms and headrests have gone dark and shiny from hands and hair. Creases at the seat front get deeper. In older homes with single-pane windows or a sunny Arizona room, one side may be noticeably lighter than the other.
If yours is drying out but not yet cracking, now is the right time to clean and condition it. Moisture put back in early helps slow the damage down.

Older pieces were made with all kinds of finishes, and sometimes the original tags are long gone. So we spot-test underneath or on the back before deciding how to proceed.
A lot of recliners from the past couple of decades are protected leather, with a pigment layer over the hide. That surface takes a full cleaning well. Aniline and semi-aniline pieces, which feel buttery and show natural markings, absorb liquid fast and are cleaned more gently. Nubuck and suede are kept nearly dry, cleaned, then brushed to lift the nap. They don't get conditioner.
Conditioning, when you add it, is where older smooth leather really benefits. After the cleaning, it soaks in and helps restore some flexibility to hide that has stiffened. You can sit back in your recliner almost right after we're done.

Each online price below covers the cleaning. Conditioning is a separate per-piece add-on, optional and highly recommended in Arizona heat.
Here are common Mesa setups:
We'd rather you know this now than be disappointed later. Cleaning and conditioning help leather that is dry, dirty and dull. They don't undo leather that has already failed.
Cracks in the seat, peeling top coat, sun-faded panels, and color that has rubbed off on the arms will still be there after we leave. So will tears and deep scratches. We don't repair, recolor or re-dye. On the plus side, those dark, shiny headrest and arm areas usually lighten up, body oil and grime come off, and the leather often feels softer. If a piece is past the point where cleaning helps, we'll say so.

Yes. Vinyl and bonded leather are cleaned the same way as smooth leather.
That's usually body oil and residue softening in the heat. Cleaning takes the buildup off, which gets rid of most of the tackiness.
No. Just clear small items off and around the piece. We may shift it a little to reach the back.
Yes. We clean the leather surfaces and work carefully around the footrest and handle.
Keep it out of direct sun, away from vents, and dust it regularly. A professional clean and condition about once a year does the rest.
