Surprise has a lot of older pets. In the 55+ neighborhoods especially, the dog has often been part of the household for a decade or more, and age brings accidents that are nobody's fault: weaker bladders, slower trips to the door, a cat whose kidneys are not what they were. Those spots tend to show up along the same route every time, near the back slider, beside the bed, at the end of the hallway.

The stain you can see is the small part. Urine runs down through the carpet backing, spreads out in the pad, and dries into salt crystals. Our first step is Un-Duz-It, an enzyme treatment applied to each affected area and left to dwell so it can digest those crystals. Every room, staircase, or hallway with a problem is its own area, and each one gets its own severity. A bedroom with one fresh accident and a hallway that just smells like the dog are two areas at two different prices. When a pet has gone back to the same place for weeks or months, the urine has usually worked down deep into the pad. We treat it where it is. Pulling up carpet or swapping out pad is not part of what we offer. On spots like that, the smell often drops a great deal without going away completely, and we point them out on the walkthrough so you know ahead of time.
Smell is a better guide than sight. Get down near the floor along baseboards, beside furniture legs, under the edge of the bed, and in room corners, since pets like edges. Older dogs tend to have accidents near exits and along their usual path, and cats favor quiet corners and the floor near a litter box. Mark what you find with a sticky note so nothing gets missed on the day.
Two dogs, or a dog and a cat, tend to mark over each other's spots, so a single accident often grows into a cluster of spots in one part of the room. If one pet is the main culprit, tell us which, since it shows us where to start looking.
Blot, do not scrub. Stand on a folded white towel to pull up as much liquid as you can, swap towels, and repeat. A splash of cool water and more blotting helps. Leave the rest for the enzyme, since most home remedies make our job harder.
