Rugs are not carpet, and cleaning them like carpet is how they get ruined. Wool, viscose, cotton, and jute each react differently to heat, moisture, and cleaning chemistry. Put them through a generic carpet process and you get browning, dye bleed, or shrinkage that never comes out.
We identify the fiber before anything wet touches your rug, then clean it the way that fiber needs to be cleaned. That expertise is what you are paying for: $1.70 a square foot online for synthetic, $2.98 for wool.
Rug material decides everything about how it gets cleaned, and getting it wrong is expensive.
Wool browns if it is over-wet and it is sensitive to high-pH cleaners. Wool also holds more soil by weight than anything else, so it needs more work, carefully.
Viscose is the one to be careful with. It is marketed as art silk or bamboo silk and it is essentially processed wood pulp. It loses strength when wet, the pile distorts, and yellowing or browning is common. We do not clean any rug with viscose in it, blends included. If that is what you have, we will identify it and tell you before starting rather than attempting it and hoping.
Natural fibers like jute, sisal, and seagrass shrink and brown with water. Most need dry methods only.
Synthetics are the most forgiving. Nylon, polyester, and polypropylene take water and heat well and clean up predictably.
If you do not know what you have, we identify it during the inspection. And if a rug is not a good fit for our process, we will say so before we start rather than after.

In-home works for machine-made synthetics, low-pile rugs in decent condition, rugs that are mostly just soiled from traffic, and anything large or awkward to move. We use controlled moisture and extraction on site.
Pet urine is a normal call for us, not a special case. We do these constantly. It soaks through to the foundation and into whatever is underneath, so surface cleaning gets the top layer and leaves the rest, which is why the smell comes back a week later with another company. We saturate, flush, and rinse the whole rug, because that is what actually removes it. On a wood floor, we roll the rug up and do it in your garage or out on the patio, so the floor underneath stays dry. Tell us upfront that there has been an accident and we will handle it properly the first time.
We do in-home cleaning, and if a rug has a problem cleaning will not fix, you hear that before we start, not after.

Desert grit is fine and abrasive, and rugs catch it right at the door. Entry rugs and hallway runners take the worst of it, since every person coming in from the driveway drops their load in the first few feet.
That grit works down to the base of the pile where it sits against the foundation of the rug and cuts at the fibers with every step. Vacuuming pulls the top layer. The rest stays until someone extracts it.

Usually a few hours, and we say within 24 hours to be safe. The 24 hours is on purpose. Different fibers and backings hold and release moisture differently, a hand-knotted wool rug is not a machine-made synthetic, and we would rather beat the number than miss it.
Airflow is what actually moves it. Ask and we will run an air mover on it while we are there.
We carry commercial air movers, Dri-Pod 360s and a low-profile Syclone, and if you want one running while we are there, ask and we will set it up. It jump starts the drying rather than leaving the room to do it on its own.
The rest is airflow. Open a window, run the ceiling fan, kick the HVAC fan on, and the room dries a lot faster than a closed-up room with nothing moving. We will tell you what to expect for your place before we leave.
Most rugs come back looking like the rug somebody paid for, colors back, pile standing up, the whole thing. That is the normal outcome.
We do not call a stain permanent until we have actually worked it, and on a rug that means testing first. We check for dye bleed before anything wet touches it, then work through more than one professional chemistry rather than forcing one product on every fiber.
Some things are damage instead of soil. Dye loss, sun fading on the exposed side, browning from a previous over-wetting, and pet urine that has already migrated into the foundation. We tell you which is which before we start rather than after.
We read the tag first. Fiber content, country of origin, and any cleaning code on it decide the method before we decide anything else. A rug with no tag gets identified by hand, because wool, viscose, and polypropylene do not look the same up close and they do not clean the same way.
Then, if we are not sure how the dyes will behave, we test for bleed in an inconspicuous spot. Synthetic fiber holds its dye. Wool, silk blends, and anything hand-knotted or overdyed can run, and finding that out in the middle of the rug is not an option.
Then dry soil removal. Most rugs get vacuumed before any moisture, because dry grit comes out dry and turns to mud the second it gets wet. If you vacuum regularly we may skip it, and we will tell you rather than charging for a step we did not need.
We clean rugs in place, right where they lie. You do not need to move anything. If you have already pulled it into the garage or somewhere easier, that works too, but nobody has to carry a rug for us.
Expensive wool is normal work for us. Hand-knotted, hand-tufted, oriental, Persian, wool and silk blends, we handle those regularly and we know what each one takes.
What we turn down is any rug with viscose in it, even a blend. It gets sold as art silk or bamboo silk, it weakens when wet, and the distortion does not reverse. We tell you before starting and leave it alone.
