Joint sand is not decoration. It wedges each paver against its neighbors so the whole surface acts as one piece. When drip irrigation, storm runoff, and a few years of sweeping carry it off, single pavers start to tip, gaps widen, and weeds and ants find a home in the lines.
A wash by itself can actually make that worse, because the water flushes out whatever sand was left. Without new sand and a seal on top, you end up with a cleaner patio that is looser than it was that morning. That is why our packages include the whole finished job.
Seal over grime and algae and you have locked them under a coating for good. The cleaning always comes first, and it is built into both package prices instead of added on top.
Oil stains work from the inside of the paver. We pull out a good share and the spot usually fades a lot, but the old drip under where a truck parked for years is seldom gone entirely. Rust from sprinkler water or fertilizer, and efflorescence, the white bloom that rises out of the paver itself, act the same way. You hear which marks are on the surface and which are in the paver during the first walkthrough.

The pavers have to dry all the way through after washing. Sand and sealer both fail in a wet joint, so we return the next day to finish.
Usually it fades a lot, but deep oil rarely clears completely. Sprinkler rust and efflorescence also start inside the paver, so expect them to lighten rather than vanish.
